We have a very large parish at Christ the King. The only way we can make more classes available is with our volunteers. Please consider volunteering on Sunday morning or Wednesday evening to teach or assist in a class. It’s a great way to connect with children! You can choose to teach the whole year or work with another adult to work as a co-teacher team. Whether your volunteer commitment is long‑term or for one time, everyone’s participation is valuable. Here are brief descriptions of volunteer roles you might consider:

Catechists

Catechists are responsible for planning, teaching and managing a class of children for a weekly period of one hour and thirty minutes.  Use several kinds of teaching media and methods, including SmartBoard (files, internet, DVD, board work), verbal presentation and discussion, text, activities, student-student interaction, etc.  *Requires Safe Environment Program (SEP) certification.

Assistants

Assistants help the Catechists in all teaching activities, at all class sessions.  Help to manage children in various class activities.  Might substitute for the catechist.  *Requires SEP certification.

Substitutes

Substitutes take on the role of a Catechist for one or a few class sessions.  Contact the catechist to discuss the events of the class substituted for.  *Requires SEP certification.

Office Volunteers

Office volunteers help by managing the office during a particular class session.  Answer the telephone and take messages.  May assist catechists in making copies, obtaining supplies, etc.

SEP Certification Requirement

Catechists, assistants and substitutes must complete the Safe Environment Program (SEP) training course online and also pass a Level II background check before volunteering. For full details, click here.

Our office will provide a reimbursement for catechists/teachers and assistants. Please send us your receipt and will have the reimbursement processed for you!

Ongoing, lifelong religious formation is the collaborative effort of the domestic church (the family), the local church (the parish) and the whole church.

Parents are the first and foremost educators of their children.
